How to Keep Your Spine Healthy – Your Charlotte Chiropractors Guide

How To Keep Your Spine Healthy

How to keep your spine healthy

Your spine is a vital part of your body, and almost all your ability to move comes from it. This is why it is crucial that you take care of your spine and keep it healthy. Your spine protects the spinal cord and nerve roots. It provides structural support to your body, (its core muscles and soft tissues) and enables flexible motion. Motions such as sitting up, walking, bending over, picking up things, and moving your next step will not be easy without a healthy spine, even the ability to stand upright. Below are some health tips you should take to promote good spinal health:

Watch Your Posture

A good posture means your body is properly aligned, with the right amount of muscle tension and strength within core muscles that support spinal structures such as the facet joints. When your posture is correct, it reduces strain to the body (reducing both neck pain and low back pain) and keeps it balanced, particularly when you are moving or exercising. It also reduces wear and tears on the facet joints, ligaments, and muscles, reducing the chances of herniated discs and chronic pain.

If you spend most of your time sitting and working behind the desk, it can be easy to ignore your posture. Because you spend most of your day sitting, your spine suffers promoting poor posture, resulting in a head forward position and placing stress on the sacroiliac joint. This is why you should pay attention to your posture and try to achieve a proper sitting position that reduces undo pressure on your spine. Also, take a break once in a while from your sitting position to stretch and walk, taking care of the constant leaning forward associated with working at a desk.

When lifting objects, it is also necessary to observe your posture to avoid twisting yourself the wrong way and damaging your spine, possibly aggravating already present spine conditions such as degenerative disc disease or even spinal stenosis. Stand as close as possible to the object, and use your legs and knees to lift the object.

Stretch Regularly

Stretching is a simple exercise, but you can’t ignore its benefits. It helps you stay flexible, which promotes good joint function. It helps you have a good range of motion and reduces your overall risk of injury.

Moreover, there are specific exercises that will help you build your core and muscles around your spine, which is extremely important to support your spine. Massage therapy can also be integrated as a treatment option. Stay active so you can lower your risk of experiencing lower back pain. Ideally, it would be best if you exercise at least three times a week, focusing on a mix of aerobics, stretching, and core strengthening activities.

Visit A Chiropractor

A chiropractor is an expert in manipulating spinal and musculoskeletal structure to restore mobility or pain management. When you are experiencing pain in your back, neck, arms, legs, and head, a chiropractor can help you by making simple and effective spinal adjustments. A Charlotte chiropractor can help to identify and treat the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms. The chiropractor’s main goal is to reduce the chances of you requiring a consultation with orthopedic surgeons leading to either spinal fusion or disc replacement.

Conclusion

Your spine health is of utmost importance so you can keep living a good quality of life. Paying attention to your posture, exercising, and keeping an active lifestyle can promote good spinal health. When there are spine issues, visiting a chiropractor is your best option.

Upper Back Pain: How Chiropractic Can Help

Upper Back Pain

upper back pain, upper back pain relief Charlotte NC, pain between shoulders

Upper back pain,  also called thoracic back pain (AKA middle back pain), is becoming more of a problem for many people. This is not surprising for people who spend most of their time hunched over a laptop while they work. Upper back pain can also be due to a trauma to the neck, such as whiplash from an auto accident or even herniated discs and can range from mild to moderate. It affects people of all ages, but it does not get the same attention as the lower back pain or neck pain even thought this pain is serious.

The pain in the upper back develops gradually. Some of first symptoms of upper back pain may include a dull pain between the shoulder blades, which slowly spreads to the shoulders over time. The pain becomes more noticeable as time goes by, getting worse, and you will also experience neck pain and stiffness in the middle and upper back, difficulty with deep breathing, feeling short of breath  perhaps even weakness in your arms, stiff joints or even muscle spasms as the pain gets worse.

What causes upper back pain?

The main function of the thoracic part of the spine is to provide stability in the trunk. As such, the primary cause of upper back pain is muscle strain and tension. Here are some other causes of pain in the upper and middle back:

  •  Bad posture
  •  Arthritis
  •  Herniated discs
  •  Rib joint dysfunction of the rib cage
  •  Weakness of muscles ligaments
  •  Degenerative disc disease
  •  Car accident
  •  Spinal stenosis
  •  Compression fracture
  •  Degeneration of the facet joints
  •  Ankylosing spondylitis
  •  Lung cancer
  •  Bad diet
  •  Emotional stress
  •  Lack of exercise
  •  Environmental pollutants

How to treat the upper back pain?

Muscle strain and tension can lead to pain and a slight dislocation of the vertebrae, which puts pressure on the nerve. Anti-inflammatory pain medicines (or overthecounter pain medicines) can help relieve the pain, but it does not address the underlying cause. The absence of pain does not mean it is already healed, and when not treating the underlying condition, the pain will become chronic increasing the chance of injury.

One of the best ways to address the upper back pain is with chiropractic care. The treatment involves making adjustments on your vertebrae, realigning it based on your needs to relieve pain. You will notice that the adjustment alleviates the pain, as it reduces joint restrictions and misalignment in the spine, reduce pain and swelling. In turn, the inflammation decreases, and the function of affected joints and nervous system improves. Aside from decreasing inflammation, pain and discomfort, chiropractic care also improves your range of motion, flexibility, improve blood flow, reduce numbness or tingling  and muscle tone and strength.

You may also receive suggested changes in your diet and exercise from the chiropractor. Depending on your condition, chiropractic care may also involve massage therapy, physical therapy, and primary care from a physician.

How often should you visit a chiropractor?

Chiropractic care may not be completed in only one visit. It is a progression, so you may have to visit the chiropractor once or twice a week at first. When your condition is acute, the visit could be as frequent as every day. As your condition improves, the chiropractor will give you things to do on your own at home, such as using an ice pack, exercises to strengthen the muscles (which may also include stretching and strengthening) so you will only have to see him once in a while. Depending on your condition, you may have to come back after some time or never again, unless you have a new problem.

Conclusion

When you experience upper back pain, you must pay attention to it as much as you pay attention to lower back pain and neck pain. Anti-inflammatory medicines and pain relievers will not cut it. You need to seek treatment to address the root cause for proper healing. Ignoring your pain will make it chronic, which could lead to a more severe issue.

How to Fix Poor Posture – Our Guide

How to Fix Poor Posture

Have you ever been annoyed by your parents shouting at you to sit up straight? Good posture isn’t purely for aesthetics. Posture talks about your body’s positioning and alignment concerning gravity.

Whether you’re standing, sitting, or lying down, gravity pulls your body down, adding pressure to your joints and muscles. Your posture will determine how this force is distributed throughout your body. If your posture is weak, you aren’t evenly distributing that force, which can lead to suffering.how to fix poor posture

Think of it as if you’re planning to build a tower. With years of effort put into architecture and design, the foundations will be strong, thus allowing the tower to stand tall for many years to come. With a weak foundation, the tower is always at risk of crumbling down, and this applies to your body. Proper posture is vital to your body’s health.

Poor Posture

What is poor posture? Bad postural positioning is a condition when a muscle or muscle group becomes too small, causing your body to be tight. This will lead to other muscles lengthening to address the tightening. Does it sound confusing? Here’s an example. If you have a condition called forward head posture, your neck will be the first to suffer. In this position you have more stress placed on the neck muscles because of the head forward position, loosing the the natural curve of the neck. Sometimes this position is called “text neck“, with the head leaning forward. Soon after, your chest, back, and arms are going to suffer as well!

Causes of Poor Posture

A multitude of reasons can cause poor posture. Unfortunately, for some, this posture issue can be a result of bone loss or arthritis. For many others, lifestyle and daily activities are contributors to their posture.

Here are some things that can cause poor posture: slouching, looking down a lot, lousy posture while sitting and working on a desktop computer for a long time, and poor workplace ergonomics. It can also be caused by inadequate sleep supports, lack of exercise, weak core muscles, obesity, and poor self-esteem. To touch on poor-self esteem, people who have this usually bend down much to avoid being noticed, developing round shoulders, harming their bodies with poor posture.

As you can see, despite diseases being able to cause poor posture, there are somethings that you can control.

Improving Posture

The best way to fix and improve posture is by doing exercises to strengthen your core strength and keeping your weight in check. This way, your body can move throughout the day as intended. If you have to work in front of a computer for long periods, make sure you have great office chairs and you are sitting properly with your feet flat on the floor and your ears in line with your shoulders. If you feel that you cannot sleep in a natural position, check if your pillows and mattress have enough support because this can go a long way to reduce back pain and chronic pain. (Sleeping on your stomach is never a good idea). If not, it is time to replace them!

When you go through your daily routines, do a posture check once in a while to ensure you have good standing posture. Make sure that you aren’t slouching, and correct your posture right away if you are doing so. If you get into the habit of correcting your standing posture, you will find that maintaining good posture will get easier. You can also fix bad posture if you strengthen your glutes and hip flexors, reminding yourself standing up straight, sitting properly and looking straight ahead can all help.

Chiropractic Treatment

Of all the visits to a chiropractor, 50 percent of the time the visits are posture-related. Depending on how old you are and how long you’ve been dealing with bad posture, a chiropractor can be vital to help improve your posture. Although there are some elements that you can control, fixing common posture issues can be a tough and painful thing to do by yourself. Sometimes, lifestyle changes aren’t enough.

Remember, the best way to address the issue is to prevent it from happening in the first place. If you have good posture, keep it that way. Just because there are ways to fix bad posture doesn’t mean you should ignore it. Remember, correcting your body is hard and sometimes painful. If you do have bad posture, make the needed lifestyle changes right away! This will help you avoid any future complications.

How To Deal With Back Pain – Tips From Your Charlotte NC Chiropractor

How To Deal With Back Pain

How To Deal With Back Pain – Tips From Your Charlotte NC

How to deal with back pain: Back pain is not something that happens overnight, nor is it confined solely to that part of your body. In some cases, back issues can cause pain in other parts of the body, depending on the nerves affected. For instance, sometimes low back pain extends down to the buttocks and legs, which maybe the result of herniated discs.

When it comes to back pain, time is the one of most crucial variable for pain relief and restoration of quality of life. People develop back pain after abusing that part of their body for many years, thereby suffer from back pain and rely on pain medications for pain relief. That includes carrying heavy backpacks and neglecting to maintain proper posture, among other things. All that abuse caused so much degenerative disc disease that it can’t be fixed or healed just like that.

Fortunately, a proper treatment plan, can over time can heal years of damage. In the next section, we will talk about the chiropractic treatments used to deal with back pain.

Internal Versus External Healing

Healing is said to be the remedy for those who suffer from back pain. However, many people think that healing comes from external sources. They believe that proper pain medications and surgery are the only solutions to chronic back pain (and completely forget about the benefits of chiropractic care). However, drugs only alleviate symptoms of lower back pain and surgery can only do so much. This is because healing comes from within, not from an external source. Healing isn’t something that’s done to your body. It’s something your body does by itself when it gets the right treatment.

Degeneration and Damage Over Time

A person who has great overall health and wellness can expect that their body will repair any damage it sustains on a daily basis. The problem is, when your body isn’t functioning properly, it can’t replace tissues. Degenerating tissues and disc injuries will then accumulate, leading to compromised function. Every time tissue is damaged, your body will send you a signal in the form of pain. Tissue breaks down all the time, and the body repairs it. All that damage adds up over time. Now, if you aren’t careful, even the tiniest amount of damage can lead to severe back pain, nerve pain and leg pain. These injuries can from a car accident or auto accident and sports injuries, just to name a few.

Chiropractic Care

With degeneration and damage over time, as well as the need for internal healing, that’s where chiropractic care comes in and treatment in Charlotte NC can be found in the best chiropractic offices.

For your reference, the word “chiropractic” means “healing with the hands.” This is an indication of what chiropractic care really is. In a nutshell, chiropractic is a healthcare profession that aims to identify and address disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.

This is why you should visit our Charlotte chiropractic office and make an appointment to be evaluated for the causation of your lower back pain. A Charlotte NC chiropractor is a healthcare professional that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular and nervous system disorders. He or she performs chiropractic treatments such as manual adjustment (or spinal manipulation) which will follow a treatment plan for pain management.

Chiropractor for Back Pain

Armed with your health history, an understanding of your lifestyle, and an x-ray of your spine, Charlotte chiropractors can develop a treatment plan to fix your problem and help restore your quality of life , helping your overall health and wellness. (So whether it is for neck pain to low back pain chiropractic clinics may be able to help with your pain.) This plan involves a vast array of therapies and multiple practitioners, including a physical therapist and a massage therapist, and others.

When it comes to back pain, your Charlotte chiropractor will help you maintain good back health. He or she ensures that the spine and surrounding structures are properly aligned and functioning. Once small malfunctions or disorders are detected, he or she can realign your spine, so the effects don’t accumulate over time.

Also, your chiropractor will educate you about how to avoid doing further damage to your body. These include eating healthy, exercising, stretching core muscles, sitting less, and getting a good night’s sleep, among others. In the end, chiropractic health care requires patience, commitment, and of course, time.

4 Ways Chiropractic Care Can Benefit High School Sports Injuries And Athletes

Sports Injuries and Athletes

Sports injuries and athletes are best treated by a Charlotte sports chiropractor near me

Football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse are some of the various sports that students in North Carolina play. Sports keeps high school students healthy and active and serves as a more wholesome alternative than playing video games. Students also learn how to be a team player.

Nevertheless, pain and injuries come with the fun and camaraderie of sports games. These problems can also affect your child’s academics and future athletic performance. Thus, it is important to have a chiropractor attend to their musculoskeletal needs. Professional athletes such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Michael Jordan have a chiropractor as part of their entourage. The benefits that both professional and high school athletes can get from chiropractic are the following:

Faster recovery

Physical contact sports such as basketball, hockey, karate, and football inevitably involve sports related injuries. Strains, bruises, and tears along the ligament can take anywhere between weeks to a year for a full recovery. During that period, your child would have no choice but to hold off from any sports activities.

Various research has shown that chiropractic care can speed up recovery time by as much as a third in some types of pain and injuries. Chiropractic’s success lies in the fact that it addresses the root cause of injury-related pain by making manual adjustments on the spine. The spine is where all the nerves in the body are connected. Chiropractic adjustments ease the pressure on the spine, which in turn relieves the nerves of the injured area. Reduced pain eventually diminishes inflammation, and lets the body heal itself faster.

Recovery without surgery

Another advantage of chiropractic is that this treatment does not need surgery, needles, or drugs. Common types of pain related to sports strain and bruising would only require the wonderful hands of a chiropractor. However, some types of injuries, such as fractures would need surgical intervention. In these cases, the chiropractor would refer you to a surgeon. They can still help your child recover faster and deal with the pain after surgery.

A holistic approach to injury mitigation

Although injuries can’t be avoided in the field, chiropractic can reduce its impact on your child’s body. A chiropractor uses a whole range of techniques such as spinal manipulation, adjustment of specific joints and muscles, laser therapy, and acupuncture to mitigate the effect of slips, falls, and sudden twists. When done routinely, preventive chiropractic care would help your child’s body heal faster. Your child’s body can also respond adequately to injurious forces that would otherwise have been severe without chiropractic.

Enhances performance

During games, the signals from your child’s brain towards specific body parts travel through the spine. By keeping your child’s spine well-aligned, chiropractic care ensures that your child would be agile, alert, and responsive. Your child’s posture would improve because of a well-aligned spine and good muscle tone. Improved reaction times, muscle tone, and posture would translate to better sports performance. Flexibility would also give them a better range of motion. Gymnasts and swimmers stand to benefit the most from the increased flexibility chiropractic can provide.

Conclusion

In most sports situations, surgery and drugs aren’t required. The strength of chiropractic lies in its ability to let the body take over the recovery effort, leading to less pain and earlier recovery. However, even if your child has to undergo surgery or take medication, chiropractic can still help your child heal faster so that they can go back to doing the things they love.

Travel And Back Pain – Our Guide

Travel and Back Pain Here is our guide to traveling with back pain

When traveling, you may often feel neck pain or lower back pain caused by long hours of sitting in a car, plane, or sleeping in a hotel bed that’s uncomfortable for you. Traveling becomes extra challenging when you have back issues, especially if you have a home environment specially designed for your condition. However, don’t let your back issues prevent you from enjoying the adventures of traveling. Here are some travel tips:

Pack Only The Necessary Things

Minimize the things you have to carry, i.e. packing light. The less you have to carry, the better it is for your chronic back pain. Don’t bring unnecessary things to minimize your efforts in lifting luggage. For this part, it is always best to plan ahead. If able, plan to use just carry-on luggage which will fit in the overhead compartment. Planning ahead can also reduce the time spent standing in lines.

Bring Back Support

Bring support that will help you sit comfortably in a vehicle, such as lumbar support (or lumbar roll), an inflatable travel pillows, or a neck pillow. You can also bring heat wraps and ice pack and a pain reliever for pain management. If you’re bringing a blanket, you can roll it to serve as a neck pillow as well. These would be considered the minimal for travel gear and travel accessories.

Wear Comfortable Footwear

It’s better to wear comfortable shoes while traveling and walking. Pack your heels and dress shoes in your luggage if you’re traveling for business. Make sure that your feet are placed on a firm surface while on the road or flying, especially on longhaul flights. Compression socks are invaluable for helping blood flow in the legs.

Prepare For Your Flights Ahead Of Time

Knowing your back issues, plan your flights around your condition. You may want to skip the non-stop flying option so you can take a break from sitting for long periods and use the layover time for stretch breaks. If you would rather spend less time flying, try to book an aisle seat or emergency exit seat, so you have extra room to stand and stretch from time to time. Although an aisle seat can be an issue in letting others on your row out, if you travel with back pain, it can become welcomed for the change positions and help prevent back pain. If you travel by air, you may want to ask the flight attendant for help placing your heavy item in the overhead bins.

If you are reading on the flight you may want to consider related articles on either mens health or womens health at the news stand. The New York Times had a wonderful article with some great medical advice and we will provide the link here.

Share The Driving

Sitting in a driving position for long hours can increase misalignment in the spine because your one foot is stretched out to the accelerator, so your hips turn. If you’re traveling with others, alternate driving with someone else so you can take a rest. And if you are getting car rentals make sure the car has lumbar pillows in each seat, this can help support pain management for a herniated disc providing pain relief. Obviously don’t take muscle relaxers if you are driving.

Move Around

Air travelers need to move around and take stretch breaks to provide pain relief for chronic pain. If you’re traveling by plane and have some free time in between flights, you may want to walk around instead of sitting as this can prevent back pain. If you’re driving, taking regular breaks is also recommended. The same goes when you’re commuting on a bus or train; stand up and take a walk. The more you can move around, the better.

Use The Pool

If your accommodation has a pool, use it to your advantage. Water is good therapy for an travel pain, and keep yourself hydrated as well with a water bottle close by.

Find A Good Bed

Beds that are too hard or soft are bad for your back and can aggravate chronic pain. If possible, call the hotel beforehand and ask if they have a firm bed. You may also ask if they have bellhop services or elevators, so you won’t have to carry a heavy item up the stairs. Plan ahead you can avoid many instances where you can reduce pain traveling in your back.

Empty Your Back Pockets

Wallets, cellphones, or anything in your back pockets can cause a misalignment in your spine if you keep them there while sitting and can especially irritate a herniated disc. So if you’re traveling, empty your back pockets because you’ll be sitting most of the time. This is also great advice when going through airport security.

Consider Your Posture

Sit properly and keep the right posture while traveling. It is only suitable for those with back pain but also for everyone who travels. There may be uncomfortable positions while on the road, so make sure you watch out for your posture.

Conclusion

Planning ahead of time and a few precautions can make smarter travel more enjoyable even when you have lower back pain. Bringing the supporting travel gear you need, being mindful of your posture, and moving around as much as possible will help ease the pressure on your back.
